CIE Smith, MD, PhD, Professor, Dept of Laboratory Medicine, Karolinska, Institutet (KI).
CIE Smith is professor in molecular genetics at Karolinska Institutet. Smith’s main research research interest is cellular signaling, especially protein phosphorylation in lymphocyte development and synthetic oligonucleotide therapies for altering gene expression and for splice-switching. His research group cloned the disease gene, BTK, for X-linked agammaglobulinemia in a collaborative effort.
His interests include the study of BTK inhibitors, which have become revolutionizing drugs for the treatment of leukemias and lymphomas. He has also developed a program for oligonucleotide medicines, especially for targeting genomic DNA in Huntington’s disease and in other trinucleotide repeat disorders. He has established Vecura at Karolinska, the major academic GMP facility in Sweden. His publications have been cited 18,900 times, h-index: 67. In 2005 he received the Descartes Prize in Life Sciences. He has been a member of the Nobel Assembly 2007 - 2018 and of the Nobel Committee for many years, including in 2018.
