Susan Slager, Ph.D., is an international leader in the genetic epidemiology of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), and its precursor condition, monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis (MBL). Through her leadership and collaborative efforts, her team has identified the majority of inherited variants for risk of CLL and shown that a combined score of these inherited variants is a strong and validated risk factor for risk of CLL. Moreover, her work has also improved the understanding of the clinical consequences of MBL, a common condition affecting 8-10 million individuals, establishing that it is not only a precursor to CLL but also a risk factor for other lymphoid cancers, non-hematological malignancies, and serious infections.
Dr. Slager is a consultant within the Divisions of Hematology and Computational Biology at Mayo Clinic. She is a professor of Biostatistics and recipient of endowed professorship in lymphoma research. Dr. Slager has led 10 NIH funded grants, is a frequent presenter, has authored over 375 peer-reviewed articles in prominent peer-reviewed journals, and has an H-index of 103. She has served on multiple committees for professional organizations and on NIH study sections.
